Cosmetic Dermatology Q & A

What is cosmetic dermatology?

Cosmetic dermatology focuses on improving the appearance and the health of the skin. Dr. Avram offers treatments including:

  • Fraxel®
  • Botox®
  • Dermal fillers
  • Kybella®
  • Laser hair removal
  • Laser tattoo removal

These treatments help to improve the texture of the skin, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improving the appearance of age spots or other discoloration, and increasing collagen production for a plump and youthful appearance to the skin.

What is Botox?

Botox is an injectable serum that reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It is most effective on the forehead and around the eyes, because Botox works by temporarily paralyzing the subdermal muscles that cause wrinkles when you squint or furrow your brow. Botox injection treatments take about 10 minutes to administer and the full effects are noticeable in a day or so. Most patients have Botox treatments every three to six months to maintain the smooth appearance it provides.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal fillers are another injectable treatment that fills in deeper wrinkles with hyaluronic acid. Some of the brands available at Dr. Avram’s offices include Juvederm, Voluma®, Restylane®, and Belotero®. A dermal filler treatment usually takes 20-30 minutes, depending on the size of the area that’s being treated. The effects of dermal fillers are noticeable immediately and last for 6-12 months.

What is Kybella?

Kybella is an FDA approved treatment to address the stubborn pocket of fat that develops under a person’s chin, causing the appearance of a double chin. Kybella is injected into the tissue where it helps to break down the fat cells, which are absorbed by the body and removed with other waste products.

What is Fraxel?

Fraxel is an innovative laser treatment that sends a precise beam of energy into the deepest layers of the skin. It reverses signs of aging, including sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles, uneven complexions, and scarring from acne, surgical procedures, trauma, or chickenpox. The treatment is an outpatient procedure that only requires a topical anesthetic during the session. You can get back to their normal activities immediately, although it’s advised to be very careful to avoid the sun in the days directly after treatment.

If you have skin concerns, such as unwanted scarring, broken blood vessels, discoloration or are also interested in procedures for wrinkles such as Botox/Fillers as well as a procedure that freezes away unwanted fat called Coolsculpting, make an appointment with Dr. Avram for a consultation today.

What is a pulsed dye laser treatment?

A pulsed dye laser treatment delivers a short intense burst of light that reduces redness in your skin, and reduces or eliminates broken blood vessels near the surface, without affecting the surrounding skin. Pulsed dye laser treatment reduces broken blood vessels in 1 to 2 treatments.

Pulsed dye laser treatment also works on hypertrophic scars, which are thick, red scars that heal above your skin. The scar absorbs the light which causes a gradual reduction in thickness and redness. Four to six treatments brings a 60-80% reduction in thickness and redness.

The pulsed dye laser treatment is a quick office procedure with minimal discomfort and an immediate return to daily activities.
