“General tips for safe use of nail cosmetics”
1. Do not allow your manicurist to cut your cuticles. If you perform your manicures at home do not cut your cuticles. Cuticles can be gently pushed back with a wash cloth after soaking.
2. Do not allow your manicurist to clean under the nails with an instrument too vigorously or deeply. This can separate the nail plate from the underlying bed and result in a host of issues.
3. Purchase your own instruments to take with you to the nail salon. Wash your instruments in soapy water after each use (dishwasher is fine) or swab with alcohol. Metal instruments can be boiled. Do not share your instruments.
4. If you experience any discomfort, stinging, burning, or itching after nail treatments, you may be having an irritant or allergic reaction to one of the products. The nail product should be discontinued immediately. If the problem persists, see a dermatologist.
5. If you wear artificial nail extensions (acrylics, wraps, gels, or tips), keep your nails short to avoid mechanical damage to the nail bed. Long nails increase the risk of having problems with your nail enhancements. Remove the extensions at the first sign of lifting of the nail away from the nail bed.
6. Cut toenails, especially the great toenail, straight across, not on a curve.
7. If you think that you may have an infection of the nail or skin on the hands or feet, see a dermatologist.
