PRP and Medical Therapy for Hair Loss: Better Together?
Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, has become an increasingly important treatment for hair loss, particularly male and female pattern hair loss. PRP uses a patient’s own concentrated platelets and growth factors, which are injected into the scalp to stimulate follicles and improve hair growth.
Importantly, PRP can be highly effective as a stand-alone treatment for hair loss. Many patients choose PRP because they do not want to take a medication every day or are concerned about potential medication side effects. For these patients, a series of PRP treatments followed by periodic maintenance can be an attractive nonsurgical approach to hair loss.
For patients who are comfortable using both PRP and medical therapy, however, emerging evidence suggests that combining treatments may provide an additional benefit. This makes sense because PRP and hair loss medications work through different mechanisms.
Minoxidil, including increasingly used oral minoxidil, helps stimulate and prolong the growth phase of the hair follicle. Finasteride reduces the effect of DHT, an important driver of male pattern hair loss. PRP provides growth factors and signaling molecules directly to the scalp.
Recent studies suggest that combining PRP with hair loss medications may improve hair density more than either approach alone in some patients. We believe this potential synergy is an important area of ongoing research.
Ultimately, hair loss treatment should be individualized. PRP alone may be an excellent option, while patients willing to combine PRP with oral minoxidil, finasteride, or other appropriate medical treatments may potentially achieve even greater improvement
