PRP and Scarring Alopecia

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy has been explored as a treatment for scarring alopecia. Scarring alopecia, or cicatricial alopecia, results from follicular destruction and replacement with fibrosis. PRP, rich in growth factors, theoretically promotes angiogenesis, reduces inflammation, and enhances tissue repair, which could mitigate disease progression and regrow hair.

Studies suggest  and our clinical experience suggests PRP may provide benefits in scarring alopecia by reducing inflammation and potentially improving hair density. Some patients with lichen planopilaris, traction alopecia or frontal fibrosing alopecia have shown improvement. Further research is needed to establish standardized protocols and determine long-term efficacy.

Platelet rich plasma can offer a safe option to limit further hair loss and regrow lost hair in scarring alopecia.
